taste locally produced Dutch snacks

Want to try some classic Dutch food & snacks? Then look no further! Here’s a list of some all time classics which most Dutchies love to buy at our stores:

  • Tompouce

If you have a sweet tooth, you will love our tompouce. It’s a pink (or orange around Kingsday) pastry with 2 crispy layers and bakery cream in the middle. On Kingsday locals line up to get them and each year over 14 million are sold. A true HEMA and Dutch treat.

  • HEMA smoked sausage (rookworst) and hotdog

Craving something a bit more savory? Then you should try a HEMA hotdog or the very popular smoked sausage. The HEMA smoked sausage is widely enjoyed in The Netherlands by one and all, there is even a vegetarian version. This may be because it fits the Dutch kitchen very well. It is often served with mashed potatoes & vegetables, a typical Dutch dinner.

  • Syrup waffles

Syrup waffles (better known as ‘stroopwafels’) is a cookie consisting of two crispy waffles with syrup in between. At HEMA the packages have Dutch designs on them. This makes them a great souvenir to bring back to your friends and family so they can have a taste. We hope they will last you the trip back home as you’ll have a hard time not eating them yourself.

  • Licorice

Licorice is a type of candy that is very popular in the Netherlands. The taste can vary from sweet, salty, bitter, soft and hard. It comes in small packages, so taking your favourites back home with you isn’t a problem.

  • Old dutch candy

As a typical Dutch department store we also sell sweets from back in the day. Although they are quite nostalgic, they are still widely popular and very tasty. As this candy is typical to The Netherlands, these also make a great gift to bring home. Especially the big jars filled with candy.

our story

The Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam, or H.E.M.A., opened its first department store in Amsterdam on 4 November 1926. Founders Leo Meyer and Arthur Isaac wanted to open a department store for "ordinary" people. Before this, department stores were very much aimed at wealthy people and most store personnel spoke French. HEMA, as it would later become known, was the first department store of its kind in the Netherlands. Products were priced at 10, 25 or 50 cents. And from day one, the essence of HEMA was defined as: optimistic, unique, clear, reliable, accessible and as typically Dutch.

our products

The basic idea behind every HEMA product is to make daily life better, easier and more fun. They are optimistic and playful, but also clean and soothing, smart and well-made. Design is form, but it can also be a feature of the product, the choice of material or ease of use. Design is also ‘design-thinking': a HEMA service devised to make sure that customers enjoy their HEMA experience. Either way, our entire range is 100% HEMA. If something is functional but not special enough, it is not HEMA design. If something is special but serves no purpose, it cannot be HEMA design either. Only the combination of the two matters. As well as a great price of course! That is the unique and recognisable HEMA signature.
